How Australia taxes a salary
- Income Tax Tax-free threshold 18,200, unchanged since 2012-13 and not indexed. Second rate cut from 16% to 15% on 2026-07-01 under Treasury Laws Amendment (More Cost of Living Relief) Act 2025. Further cut to 14% legislated for 2027-07-01.
- Medicare Levy 2% of taxable income, with a low-income exemption and shade-in range. Thresholds are indexed annually and announced in the Budget; 28,011 and 35,014 are the most recent published singles figures.
- Low Income Tax Offset Non-refundable. Full 700 up to 37,500, withdrawn at 5 cents per dollar to 45,000, then 1.5 cents per dollar, reaching zero at 66,667. Cannot reduce tax below zero and does not offset the Medicare levy.
