Methodology
What these numbers are, where they come from, and what they deliberately leave out.
Verification
Every country carries the tax authority it was checked against and the date of that check. A country is only published once a person has compared each figure against the authority's own page. Countries that have not cleared that check are held back rather than published with a caveat.
What is not modelled
- Single filers only. Married, joint and household filing change the result substantially in many countries and are not yet supported.
- Statutory reliefs such as child tax credits, mortgage interest deductions and regional allowances.
- Employer-side contributions. Figures show what leaves your gross pay, not what your employer pays on top.
- Mandatory 13th and 14th month salaries, which affect the monthly figure in several countries.
Currency conversion
Conversions use European Central Bank reference rates, retrieved live. If rates cannot be retrieved, figures are shown in their own currency and labelled as not comparable, rather than converted at a stale rate.
Converting two salaries into one currency makes them comparable in units and nothing more. It says nothing about what each buys.
Corrections
If a figure looks wrong, it may be. Tax thresholds move mid-year in some countries, and a rate correct in January can be wrong by August. Corrections are welcome.
