How Italy taxes a salary
- Contributi INPS Employee rate for private-sector workers. Public-sector employees pay 8.80% and apprentices 5.84%. Deducted from RAL to reach the IRPEF taxable base. An additional 1% applies above the first pensionable earnings band, and a contribution ceiling applies to workers who joined after 1996; neither is modelled, and the 2026 thresholds for both are unsourced.
- IRPEF The second bracket fell from 35% to 33% with effect from 1 January 2026, worth up to 440 EUR a year. Several calculators published well into 2026 still show 35%, so cross-check anything that disagrees. Verified against a published worked example: 60,000 taxable gives 28,000 at 23% plus 22,000 at 33% plus 10,000 at 43%, or 18,000 EUR.
- Detrazione per lavoro dipendente A tapered credit against gross IRPEF, not a deduction from income. Expressed here in slope-intercept form: the statute writes the middle band as 1,910 + 1,190 x (28,000 - R) / 13,000 and the upper band as 1,910 x (50,000 - R) / 22,000, which are the same lines. Cross-checked at 30,000 EUR, where the formula gives 1,736.36 and a published calculator gives about 1,736.
