How Malta taxes a salary
- Social Security Contribution (Class 1) 10% of the basic weekly wage, capped at 55.93 EUR a week. That cap is reached at 559.30 EUR a week, or 29,084 EUR a year, giving an annual maximum of 2,908.36 EUR. Deliberately NOT marked deductible: Malta computes income tax and contributions independently on gross, unlike most of Europe. Persons born before 1962 fall under a lower cap, and the employer pays a matching 10% which does not affect employee take-home.
- Income Tax Charged on full gross emoluments with no deduction for contributions. Malta has no municipal or regional tax and no separate payroll levies. Married and parent computations use wider zero-rate bands, further widened from 2026 for qualifying children, and are not modelled: a married taxpayer with two or more children pays nothing on the first 22,500 EUR.
