How Portugal taxes a salary

  1. Segurança Social Employee rate on employment income, with no ceiling. The employer pays a further 23.75% which does not affect employee take-home. Contributions reach the income tax base through the dedução específica rather than as a separate deduction.
  2. Dedução Específica (Categoria A) The greater of the fixed figure or the year's social security contributions. Above roughly 41,700 EUR of gross the contributions are the larger of the two, so the deduction tracks 11% of income from that point. Several published sources still quote the older fixed 4,104 EUR.
  3. IRS Nine brackets, expressed as Portugal expresses them: marginal rate applied to the whole taxable income, less a published parcela a abater. That is the statutory calculation under artigo 68.º CIRS, and it is NOT identical to summing the bracket slices: the published parcelas are rounded, so a pure slice sum differs by around 24 cents at 60,000 EUR. This file follows the statute. Bracket limits rose 3.51% for 2026 and rates in brackets two to five fell 0.3 points.
  4. Taxa Adicional de Solidariedade 2.5% on taxable income between 80,000 and 250,000 EUR, 5% above 250,000. Charged only on the excess over each threshold.
