What comes out of a South Carolina paycheck
- Federal income tax Seven brackets from 10% to 37%, after the federal standard deduction.
- Social Security 6.2% up to the annual wage base, after which it stops entirely.
- Medicare 1.45% with no ceiling, plus 0.9% above 200,000 USD.
- SC Income-Adjusted Deduction (SCIAD) Replaces the federal standard and itemised deductions, from which South Carolina decoupled under H.4216. 15,000 USD for a single filer, withdrawn between 40,000 and 95,000 of income. Joint filers get 30,000, withdrawn between 80,000 and 190,000.
- South Carolina State Income Tax Two rates with a single breakpoint, applying regardless of filing status. SCDOR states the upper band as 5.21% less 966 USD, which is continuous with the lower band: both give 597 at 30,000. Replaces the 0/3/6% structure. Sources published before March 2026, including at least one competitor guide still live, show a 6.2% top rate that no longer applies. Rate reduction triggers begin in 2027 and can collapse the upper band into the lower.
Local taxes are not included. City and county income taxes sit below the state level and are excluded here. They are material in a few places, averaging roughly 1.6% of AGI across New York, 1.2% in Ohio and 1% in Pennsylvania.
