How Sweden taxes a salary
- Grundavdrag A basic allowance that rises then falls with income. Expressed in prisbasbelopp: 0.423 PBB at the bottom, climbing at 20% of income between 0.99 and 2.72 PBB, flat at 0.77 PBB to 3.11 PBB, then withdrawn at 10% to a floor of 0.293 PBB. Skatteverket rounds the result UP to the nearest 100 SEK, which is why the published anchors are 25,100, 45,600 and 17,400 where the raw coefficients give 25,042, 45,584 and 17,346. All three match, which is what confirms the coefficients.
- Allmän pensionsavgift Nominally 7% of earned income capped at 47,100 SEK, but every taxpayer receives a tax reduction of 100% of the charge, so the net effect on take-home is zero. Shown as a line rather than omitted, because Sweden has essentially no employee-side social contribution: the 31.42% arbetsgivaravgift is entirely employer-side and does not reduce the employee's gross.
- Statlig inkomstskatt 20% on taxable income above the skiktgräns of 643,000 SEK. Since the grundavdrag floors at 17,400 for high earners, this corresponds to a brytpunkt of 660,400 SEK of gross income, which Skatteverket publishes separately and which is a useful cross-check on the allowance.
