What comes out of a Washington paycheck

  1. Federal income tax Seven brackets from 10% to 37%, after the federal standard deduction.
  2. Social Security 6.2% up to the annual wage base, after which it stops entirely.
  3. Medicare 1.45% with no ceiling, plus 0.9% above 200,000 USD.
  4. Washington State Income Tax No tax on ordinary wage or salary income. Washington taxes capital gains, and in 2026 adopted a new 9.9% tax applying only to income above 1,000,000 USD. Neither affects a typical salary, and neither is modelled here. The 0.58% WA Cares payroll tax is also excluded.

Local taxes are not included. City and county income taxes sit below the state level and are excluded here. They are material in a few places, averaging roughly 1.6% of AGI across New York, 1.2% in Ohio and 1% in Pennsylvania.
